Carver School holds a powerful place in Fulton’s history. Built in 1937, it was the only school to serve the city’s African American students until 1968, when Fulton integrated its schools. George Washington Carver himself spoke at the school’s dedication in 1937. The school was listed in the National Register in 1996. The National Register nomination can be found here.
Many members of the current George Washington Carver Cultural Center Board — the same board that championed this tax credit redevelopment — once walked these very halls as children. Today, they stood together with board president Carmen Brandt, former Missouri Representative and board vice-president Gracia Backer, and Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek to cut the ribbon on its next chapter.
Seeing classrooms reimagined into bright apartments, a gym converted into shared community space, and historic details like wood doors and chalkboards preserved throughout, it’s clear this rehabilitation is more than construction — it’s stewardship, memory, and pride made tangible. Honoring the past while building for the future…that’s what preservation is all about.
